Family of Poisoned Lottery Winner Hit Out at Police

The family of a lottery winner who was poisoned with cyanide have hit out at the police for not investigating the crime. Urooj Khan scooped $1,000,000 on a scratch off ticket in Chicago in 2012, taking the lump sum and paying taxes he settled on a win worth $424,000. However, after posing with his win he died the day his cheque was sent and never received it.

His sister has now spoken out about the police’s reticence to investigate the crime and claims that police have said they are ‘too busy’ to investigate. Upon the death it was thought that Khan died of natural causes, but after an exhumation it was proved that cyanide poisoning was the cause of death and the whole case was handed to the homicide team.

Despite four years passing, no one has ever been brought to justice, and although police say the case is still open, Khan’s sister says they are not doing enough!

With the win outstanding, a homicide case causes issues with who will receive the money afterwards. Eventually the lottery win was shared between his wife and now estranged step-daughter after a bitter probate battle, but there is still little peace for the family.

After weeks of fighting to even prove it was a murder, now Mr Khan’s sister Meraj feels like the police just aren’t taking the case seriously at all, and it seems the entire case may be fuelled by the $1,000,000 win!

While we all dream about what we might do with that big lottery win, none of us imagine that we may be murdered for the cash before we have even received it. This is a real case of a windfall turning bad, and without answers from the police there seems little chance of peace for the family.
