In the last few weeks we’ve seen both the Powerball and Mega Millions Jackpots soar. Last week we brought you the news that the Powerball jackpot had found a winner and now a single winner has scooped the $521,000,000 Mega Millions jackpot becoming the fourth biggest lottery winner in Mega Millions history.
Lottery officials have confirmed that one lucky ticket scooped the entire jackpot and that lucky ticket was sold in the New Jersey area of the US. If you bought Mega Millions tickets at the Lukoil petrol station in Riverdale, about 30km out of New York City then you might want to check your lottery tickets quick smart as this is where the winning ticket was sold.
The prize is the fourth biggest in Mega Millions history, and the tenth biggest prize ever won in the US, sending this winner straight to the lottery hall of fame. It’s the first time the Mega Millions jackpot has been won since January, rolling over for many weeks to hit the huge amount.
Petrol Station manager Nash Riad said that they had sold many tickets in the last few days and so he had no idea who the winner could possibly be. Lottery officials have confirmed that they don’t yet have any idea who the winner is, and are urging players to check their tickets carefully to see if they are the latest huge winner.
Due to US lottery rules the winner will have to pay tax on the win, and this will reduce the final amount quite significantly. The winner can take the $521,000,000 in taxable payments over the next 29 years, or opt to take a taxable lump sum of $317,000,000.
